As a kid, Jackie Robinson loved sports. And why not? He was a natural at football, basketball, and, of course, baseball. But beyond athletic skill, it was his strength of character that secured his place in sports history. In 1947 Jackie joined the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking the long-time color barrier in major league baseball. It was tough being first- not only did "fans" send hate mail but some of his own teammates refused to accept him. Here is an inspiring sports biography, with black-and-white illustrations throughout.

  • Worked great for my son's 3rd grade book report. He understood and was able to summarize well, and has retained some of the information, always a plus!
  • My son LOVED READING these books over the summer before starting 4th grade. Simple, factual and sparked discussion.
  • Grandkids love reading about famous artists, sportsmen, inventors, etc. These are great for promoting
good conversations with your kids and grandkids.
  • These books are great. Informative for non-fiction and perfect readability level from my elementary school child. We love these books.
  • A great option for pre-teen baseball lovers. Provides parents an opportunity to explain pre-civil rights' America and the racial bias, bigoted associated practices of that time period.
  • This was required summer reading for my 9 year old son. It was a quick and easy read with lots great info.
  • I see the age listed as 8-12. My 8 year old did well with the level of writing. There were some words that were a learning experience, but overall I feel he was able to keep up, and he learned a lot (as did I while helping him with the report). If you are buying this for the advertised age level, I think you will be happy.
  • Really good to read for lesson of behavior
