Read The Guy Guide to Four Battles Every Young Man Must Face a manual to overcoming life common distractions eBook Jonathan McKee
"Seasoned youth worker and Bible teacher Jonathan McKee opens his latest book, "The Guy's Guide to Four Battles Every Young Man Must Face," with a great story about his dog Lionel who ate three months' worth of fat drippings from the grill's drip tray. That dog was well, "sick as a dog" he sayys. Then, comparing that to the many "fun" things the world dangles in teens faces today, McKee asks, "Is four minutes of feasting on fat worth thirty-six hours of regret?"
Through the rest of the book he unpacks that concept, looking at four key issues that young guys face today: self-esteem, screens, sexual temptation and substance abuse. Each chapter includes some questions to get guys thinking about and digesting what they're reading, and then McKee offers some final thoughts. Jonathan doesn't skirt any issues. He deals with issues like pornography and substance abuse with honesty. He uses scientific studies and testimonials to show how God truly has our best in mind and the best design. When we do things as God has outlined in His Word, we experience life as God intended--happier, healthier, and blessed.
This highly relevant, open, and honest book is one young men can read on their own, or it's something parents can use as a conversation starter. It's even something small groups could use to begin some important discussions. McKee offers biblical wisdom to deal with four of the most significant struggles young men face today.

*I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for this honest review. The opinons expressed are my own. - Jonathan McKee writes about teens, he writes for teens and he does a fantastic job writing to teens. There are countless resources out there for youth ministry and for teens in general. And if ever there was a bracket challenge to decide who has written the greatest resources for teens, McKee would be the Duke of teen resources. Unless Duke surprisingly got beat. Then he'd be one of the other top teams you'd expect to see in a Final Four.
Wow, that illustration got away from me quick, but here's the point. Jonathan has done his research and he knows how to write and speak so teens, youth leaders, and parents of teens will listen. And you should be listening, because he brings his best every single time. His latest book, The Guy's Guide to Four Battle Every young Man Must Face A Manual to Overcoming Life's Common Distractions, is another winner.
This one is written directly at teen guys about, you guessed it, four battles every young man (and old man for that matter) is going to face. Those battles are self-image, screens, sex, and substance abuse. What's great is that Jonathan doesn't preach at the reader. If you didn't know who wrote the book, you might think it was your friend just being real with you, especially if that friend were armed with great illustrations, profound research, and some Scripture to back up what he was saying.
This is solid truth that our young men need to be reading. Chapters are in bite-size chunks so you're not overwhelmed, plus they have great discussion questions, either to ponder on your own or with your squad. This is another great resource! - Jonathan McKee continues to produce helpful resources for families, in his latest offering ("Guy's Guide to Four Battles...") he offers a practical manual of guidance for anyone and everyone who will take the time to read it. In the chapter entitled "The Manual" Jonathan tells a humorous story of hiring someone to assemble something for him. They guy built it without consulting the instruction manual (how many of us haven't done that at least once?). He then gives us the purpose of the book a couple of pages later when we read, "Do you want to know what this book is all about? Being humble enough to read the instructions." See, it's right there...read the instructions. Jonathan skillfully describes and offers biblical insight to help young men (old men too) navigate their way through four of the biggest distractions we face. This is one of those books that will be helpful to any who do not like reading the instructions. Perhaps it will even challenge them to not only read the instructions but to follow them. This is a great read and would be a great gift for any man in your family or circle of influence. Buy it right now!
- Our son loves this book! Maybe it's because McKee has a fundamental grasp on what it's like being a young boy in America today. From the external threats of pornography and drugs/alcohol to the more internal issues such as self-esteem, the problems guys face today are addressed in this book in relevant and realistic ways. Not only does our son like the stories scattered throughout the book, he also appreciates the wisdom embedded in them. So will your son...so get him this book!
- This is a great book for teenage guys trying to figure out where they belong in the world. Jonathon McKee does an amazing job at explaining difficult subjects in an entertaining, easy to understand way. When other people try to avoid certain subjects because they may be awkward, he addresses them head-on while focussing on what the Bible says.
- This is a great book for teenager guys! Jonathan McKee does a great job addressing battles that all teenage guys deal with. This would be a great resource to use to encourage discussion in a youth ministry setting or for a parent to give to their teenager son. I highly recommend it!
- As a mom, I truly appreciate Jonathan’s efforts to provide this helpful, up to date, hard to discuss topics and real world examples based on Truth for my teen guy, and my daughter read it too. Teens are hungry for information and here are the answers. Enjoy!
- Practical advise, easy to read, great reading for young men, parents, and those who work with young people.
