Maui Revealed The Ultimate Guidebook Andrew Doughty Leona Boyd 9780996131889 Books Reviews
- The first of these books that disappointed me. Not because it isn't a wonderful source of information, but because the authors/publishers have decided to limit the information you can get in the book and refer you to their app. They proclaim it as free, but after you buy the book, find out lodging information is only available on their app, you have to register for their app, then you find out that it is very limiting so they want you to pay another $7 to have complete access to their app. They try to sound clever but in all reality it is just another way to get more money. I have purchased others and had the latest version of the their Maui ebook, which was not limiting. Going to Maui in April I thought I would get their latest and greatest version that just came out, but in the book form which is more expensive and requires the app for all the info. I am hoping the new ebook version has all the latest information and does not require the app payment for more. I am not going to buy it, but it is just something for you to think about if you are considering the book purchase. Again, all of their books are really nice, I am just disappointed that they have a hidden way of trying to extract more money from you.
- Buyer beware. I bought this book wanting to look at the advertized "real reviews of all the resorts". Guess what? The book states it us too much information to put in a book. The author states to try his app "Hawaii Revealed". That turned out to be a PAID app to the tune of $550 per year.
- Claims it reviews hotels. It doesn't. Pretty big let down. Bought new edition for updated hotel reviews but they didn't bother to do them.
I already have bought the app prior to buying the book - so telling me not to worry I can buy or download the app to get the hotel reviews is irritating. The description of the book says it has hotels reviews. That is very misleading as it doesn't. And the hotel reviews on the website/app have not been updated for a very long time. I bought the book based on the description hoping that they had finally updated the hotel reviews. But they hadn't.
I used to love these guidebooks but I think that the authors are now just monetizing their early investments in writing them rather investing in actually updating them so I will steer clear from now on. - This is the third Hawaii Revealed guidebook I have purchased. Really liked Kauai and the Big Island, but this book was disappointing because the lodging reviews were left out entirely. Supposedly the lodging reviews (and other info) is available on the app, but that is an extra charge that I didn't pay. Would have been nice if lodging info were included in the book or, at least, if the app were free with a book purchase.
- My brother and I were on Maui for about 4 days last summer and we used this guidebook to get around. If you plan on driving the Hana Highway (aka Road to Hana), buy this book—it is worth it for that alone. It has every stop you could possibly make along the way listed in an intuitive and accessible manner; it allowed us to budget our time along our drive and pick and choose the sights that most appealed to us. There are a few beaches the guidebook recommends that require a bit of a walk to get to, and these are the best—ESPECIALLY the red sand beach. It was so beautiful and really not that crowded.
The best advice the book gave was to keep driving past the Seven Sacred Pools and loop around the backside of Haleakala, essentially circumnavigating the eastern half of Maui. A lot of cars turn around after the pools and double back through the windy jungle road you just spent hours driving—it's a beautiful drive, but I wouldn't want to do it twice in one day. Just keep driving—even when the road turns to dirt and gets bumpy—and you'll be rewarded by a rugged, mountainous landscape to your right that sweeps down dramatically toward the ocean to your left. You will be literally one of like 3 cars that continue on, so it feels like a private adventure after the packed, touristy Road to Hana. The land is dry here—I think the mountain produces a bit of a rain shadow—and the gorges are wreathed with clouds. It's so cool driving from the jungle into rolling rangeland. I cannot recommend it enough. Keep in mind, we rented a Jeep.
The rest of the guidebook's excellent too lol - This guide it's destined for a high-end travel, not so good for backpacking. What is really annoying is that makes a lot of references to the Hawaii revealed app that also costs. So it's incomplete without the app.
- Constantly refers to the app, which requires an additional purchase (not free as the book advertises). Restaurant reviews dominated by chain restaurants.
- Maui Revealed seems to be the best and most popular guide to Maui. Our Air BnB hosts had an older edition and I can't remember how many other tourists I saw with this book. At times the writer can be a little snarky. but we like that type of attitude. The only draw back was the eating places recommendations. There is just no way to keep up with eateries - they can come and go so quickly. We tried to find a couple of suggested places but they were already gone. Also Hana has only a couple of places to eat in town but there are a lot as you get close. We wish he'd mention how poor the choices were in Hana and maybe suggested a place outside the town.
